The Government of India's Ministry of Education resolved on 27 July 1961 to establish the National Council of Educational Research and Training, which formally began its operation on 1 September 1961. The Council formed by merging seven existing institutions of the National Government including the Central Institute of Education (1947), the Central Bureau of Textbook Research (1954), the Central Bureau of Educational and Vocational Guidance (1954), the Directorate of Extension Programmes for Secondary Education (1958), the National Institute of Basic Education (1956), the National Fundamental Education Centre (1956), and the National Institute of Audio-Visual Education (1959).

Qualification : - For Professor : An eminent scholar with Ph.D. qualification(s) in the concerned/allied/relevant discipline and published work of high quality, actively engaged in research with evidence of published work with a minimum of 10 publications as books and/or research/policy papers and A minimum of ten years of teaching experience in university/college.
For Associate Professor : Good academic record with a Ph.D. Degree in the concerned/allied/relevant disciplines and A Master’s Degree with at least 55% marks and A minimum of eight years of experience of teaching.
For Assistant Professor : Good academic record as defined by the concerned university with at least 55% marks at the Master’s Degree level in a relevant subject from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university and candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) in the relevant subject for Lecturer/Assistant Professor conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC like SLET/SET.
