DRDO was formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of the then already functioning Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO). DRDO was then a small organisation with 10 establishments or laboratories. Over the years, it has grown multi-directionally in terms of the variety of subject disciplines, number of laboratories, achievements and stature.

Qualification : - Graduate Apprentice Trainees : A Degree in Engineering or technology granted by a statutory University/ by an institution.
Diploma Apprentice Trainees : A Diploma in Engineering or technology granted by a State Council or Board of Technical Education established by a State Government/by a University/ by an institution.
ITI Apprentice Trainees : A Certificate in vocational Course involving two years of study after the completion of the secondary stage of school education recognized by the All India Council for Technical education.
